Chrism Mass

The Chrism Mass for the Diocese of Des Moines was celebrated this evening at the Cathedral of St. Ambrose.  Sacred Heart's Confirmation class, along with a few parents, were present.

During the Mass priest of the diocese renew their commitment to priestly service.  Therefor, the confirmandees were able to witness Father Pisut renew his commitment.

Also, during the Mass the presentation and blessing of oils occurred.  The oils are blessed by the Bishop and then the Pastor takes them back to his parish to use throughout the year.  The oils that are blessed are the oil of the sick, the oil of catechumens, and the sacred chrism.
The Oil of the Sick is used in the Sacrament of the Annointing of the Sick.

The Oil of Catechumens is used used for Catechumens and the Elect., as well as infants, in preparation for Baptism.

The Sacred Chrism is used in Confirmation, the ordination of priests and bishops.  It is also used to anoint new church buildings and altars.  During the blessing of the Sacred Chrism the Bishop mixes the sweet-smelling balsam into the oil, and breathes over the oil itself as a sign of the Holy Spirit's action through holy anointing with the oil.  The Bishop and priests invoke the presence and action of the Holy Spirit on all to be anointed with Chrism

The oils are kept in metal or glass bottles called "chrismatories," "chrismals," or "ampullae." These vessels are then stored in a cabinet called an "ambry," which is usually fixed to the wall of the sanctuary.

The evening ended with the young men talking to Bishop Pates and having their picture taken with him..
