Women of Sacred Heart Minutes

Women of Sacred Heart met on February 16, 2012.
The meeting was opened by president, Jaynane Hardie, with a prayer at 6:30p.m.
There were 11 members present:  Jaynane Hardie, Alice Herring, Patricia Thompson, Diane Beatty, Evelyn Pollard, Gloria Lee, Mary Sims, Michelle McKernan, Carol Marner, Laurette Scheve and Maxine Willadson.
Michelle and Laurette gave a very informative program about their trip to the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament located in Hanceville, Alabama which is a house of prayer open to people of every faith.  It was founded by Mother Angelica after she had been traveling to Bogota, Columbia.  As she was going to pray one day, she saw a statue of a nine or ten year old Jesus out of the corner of her eye.  As she passed by, she saw the statue come alive and turn towards her and say, “Build me a temple and I will help those who help you.”  The temple took 5 years to construct and all the monies were donated by 5 anonymous families.  It houses the second largest monstrance in the world.  The largest monstrance is in Germany.  The sisters at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament are a cloistered community.  The “Brothers” live in a 2 story white ban just inside the gate of the monastery.  The brothers help the sisters and Mother Angelica with manual labor, landscaping, building and lawn work.  The books and photos that they brought were beautiful stained glass windows, marble floors and gold leaf everywhere.  Both ladies stated that you really feel a presence of Jesus there.  They stated there is very affordable lodging for guests in some of the houses located close to the shrine.
The minutes were read and approved.
Treasurer’s Report:  Sandy stated the current balance is $2535.75.  She stated we had one expenditure of $27.95 for new checks but this was an error and that the bank will correct this.
Old Business:
  1. Alice read one more thank you note for the Christmas plate that was delivered.
  2. We had 3 people at Manor Mass and 8 people visited at Northridge.
  3. The ladies worked very hard cleaning the closets and bathrooms at the Parish Center but had quite a time anyhow. Also replaced the toilet seats.
  4. We had a nice visit with Helen Miskimin at Legacy Lodge and Gloria took several pictures.  Had wonderful rolls and cookies also.
  5. Jaynane read a report from Sandy Schmitt from the Interchurch Council.  There were 14 members representing 7 churches present at the meeting.  The ministry center served 62 families in January for a total of 187 individuals. This included 7 new families.  The Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) in Oskaloosa took in 22 women and 9 children in January.  They will have a purple ribbon fundraiser on March 24th.  CIS does get funding from Fed., State, and Counties—including Lucas Co. but, of course, never enough.  ICC voted to donate $100 to CIS.  We had 4 members from Sacred Heart at the Christian Unity supper; Alice Herring, Gloria Lee, Janet Ripperger and Sandy Schmitt.  Sandy passed out flyers to be posted in each church inviting the public to the KC fish fry on Fridays during Lent.  Next meeting will be held Tuesday, March 6th at 7 pm at Sacred Heart.
  6. .Dave Blong brought an estimate from Alex Drake regarding new lighting for the parish center.  Total cost is $1454.  There is a rebate of $316.  making the actual total cost of $1138.  Pat Thompson made a motion that the WOSH would pay half of the $1454. which would be $727.  Carol Marner seconded the motion.  Motion passed unanimously.
New Business:
  1. Maxine Willadson sent a letter regarding Parents and Children First.  The Lucas County Child Abuse Prevention Council is preparing for their annual fundraiser to help promote child abuse awareness in Lucas County.  There will once again be an auction for the baskets donated and a luncheon will be held on March 15th with proceeds going to various programs.  This past year the Child Abuse Prevention Center served 76 families with 126 children under the age of 5 through their weekly parent education classes.  Gloria Lee made a motion that WOSH donate $100 seconded by Evelyn Pollard.  Motion passed unanimously.
  2. Graduation Sunday:  Evelyn stated that the parish center has been reserved.  She has the invitation on her computer and will get it to Pat Thompson and Pat will mail letters to junior class parents to help prepare and serve the brunch.
  3. Interchurch Council:  Maxine will bring a pan of bars and Gloria Lee will bring 2 dozen cookies for the meeting. Mary Chapman will bring ham salad sandwiches as she has in the past.  Maxine and Pat will help Sandy Schmitt with the set up and serving.

The next meeting will be Thursday March 15th.
Thanks to Pat and Alice for the Valentine sandwiches, fruit and dessert.  Pat Thompson and Diane Beatty will provide refreshments at the next meeting.
