Members of Sacred Heart Help the Homeless

written by Kathleen Chester

“If you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.”
~ Isaiah 58:10

Every Friday, volunteers and members of Joppa Homeless Outreach of Des Moines pack their vehicles with food, clothing and other essentials and distribute them to their homeless brothers and sisters. On Friday, February 12th, Sacred Heart parishioners Laurette Scheve, Randy Schultz, Michelle McKernan, and Kathleen Chester joined them.

Joppa Homeless Outreach’s main mission is to create a community of unconditional love, support and hope for the homeless. They visit tent camps to offer food, clothing, camping equipment and other basic necessities. In addition, they say the following is very important:
  • Treat each person with dignity and respect
  • Get to know their history, story, issues; and
  • Build relationships, hug them and tell them they are loved regardless of their condition or past behaviors and mistakes.
The idea to join this effort was presented by Laurette Scheve as a possible youth group activity. “I thought a few adults from Sacred Heart should participate to evaluate whether it is appropriate activity for our youth group,” Laurette says. The general consensus from the four is that serving the homeless is not only an appropriate activity, but a very worthwhile one.

Our contribution the day we volunteered was to provide the food while Joppa Outreach organized the boots and blankets donated by various organizations. The day we joined them a local Boy Scout troop had donated several bags of new stocking hats and gloves as well as hand made Valentines.

What we found is that the homeless are well hidden among the trees and behind buildings – many times only a short distance from the passing traffic and within viewing distance of our state’s capital building.

We were given the opportunity to serve Jesus Who was present in Rita, a middle-aged woman living in a camper with her 18 cats and two dogs. We met Al, who loves to talk to the youth groups when they volunteer to make sure they don’t see the homeless lifestyle as glamorous. We met Bobby, Carol, Keith, and George. Joining us were Michelle and Bill – two volunteers who were formally homeless and previous recipients of Joppa Outreach assistance. They seemed genuinely proud to be a part of taking propane to their friends.

There is tremendous need for financial donations as the propane cost delivered during the month of February was $3,000. Propane is used to both heat tents and cook food. Apparently, just a few days prior to our arrival, Joppa organizers weren’t sure where the money would come from to supply the week’s propane delivery when a donor came through with the amount needed to cover the fuel. Youth groups and churches volunteer by providing a warm meal. Aside from nourishment the food provides, the act of serving is a witnesses to our Christian faith and of the love Jesus has for them.

We all seemed to agree that the homeless are a misunderstood class of people. It was hard for us to imagine not having shelter and not being able to provide for basic necessities.

Joppa said one of the many questions asked is, “Why are the people homeless?” They said the following: There are many reasons for homelessness, such as mental illness, loss of jobs or family, young adults with no support system, and additions. But at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter why. These are men and women with few options. They’ve hit bottom and they need love and hope.

For more information, you can visit joppaoutreach.org or ask one of the four that volunteered from our parish.

“In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha who was always doing good and helping the poor.”

Youth Group Soup/Bunco

On Saturday evening, February 23, the Youth Group hosted a soup supper with Bunco to follow.   Parishioners were invited to join the youth so as to help them raise money for their summer mission trip to Colorado.  A variety of tasty soups were on the menu such as Chili, Potato, Chicken Noodle and Chicken Enchilada.  Rolls, vegetables and dessert were also offered with the meal.

Bunco followed the supper.  Ten games with 40 participants made for a lively group.  Prizes were awarded to Top Score, Second Place, Most Buncos, Low Score and Most Wipe Outs.  During the game, wrapped prizes were given to players who rolled snake eyes.  Once all the prizes for snake eyes were taken and snake eyes was rolled again, the roller would steal the prize from one of the previous players who had rolled snake eyes.

The Youth Group raised over $200.00 dollars for this event.  Thanks to all who participated in this fundraiser.

Youth Group Works at Lavitsef

written by Teresa Lahart

Lavitsef Kids' Carnival started out cool, but the sun warmed it up nicely on Saturday, October 24. Several organizations and local groups hosted kids games and the chamber sponsored the prizes. Sacred Heart Youth Group held a football toss game. The older kids had as much fun as the younger ones. In addition, there was a costume contest, goodie bags for kids 12 years and younger, Fletcher train rides, balloons, and an affordable lunch. After lunch participating businesses offered trick or treating for the kids. Sacred Heart Youth, under the direction of Kristi Schultz, contributed to a safe, fun-filled family activity for our community, as well as earned Silver Cord hours and Confirmation service hours. We can't wait until next year!

Youth Group Yard Sale

written by Teresa Lahart

Thanks to all who helped with or donated to the Sacred Heart Youth Group Yard Sale. A huge thank you goes to Greg & Suzie Cohen for their donation of furniture and other items, and for the use of their yard and garage. It was a great success! The furniture for sale was a great draw for customers who picked up many other items they couldn't live without. And the lemonade stand was a refreshing treat that added to the grand total of $500.00. We have a good number of youth going to the National Catholic Youth Conference in Kansas City in November and this yard sale will help pay their way. Thank you Sacred Heart and thank you Kristi and Randy Schultz for organizing, working the sale and moving furniture around. We also wouldn't have had a great sale without Chrissy Blank's help and guidance.

When: Friday, August 14, 10 am - 6 pm and
Saturday, August 15, 8 am - 12 noon

If you are only available part of the time, please let us know when that will be. Any parents or other volunteers will also be appreciated.

Also, if you have an item that would benefit from being in the Hy-Vee Trader, please send an e-mail to sacredheartchariton@gmail.com by Friday, August 7 with a description of the item so we can advertise it with the rest of the items.

If you have questions, please contact Kristi Schultz or Teresa Lahart. Thank you in advance for your contributions!

Youth Group Car Wash Fundraiser

By Charlotte Anne Hunkele

On Saturday, July 18, 2009, from 10 AM to 1 PM, members of Sacred Heart Youth Group washed cars in the HyVee parking lot to raise money to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference. The conference will be a three-day experience of prayer, service, catechesis, and recreational activities. It takes place on November 19- 21, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri.

The grey and cloudy sky did not dampen the enthusiasm for the fundraiser. Kristi Schultz, Marty Lahart and Charlotte Hunkele, joined the Youth Group member to help greet customers, and lend a hand in the activity. HyVee was very generous in allowing the group to use their water and parking area. They gave the youth a special spigot that allowed them to use two hoses at one time. Parents helped by supplying buckets, rags, hoses, and car soap. Quite a few dads stopped by to supervise and guide the activity.

Every now and again, the hose sprayed some of the workers and that made the job fun, especially for the one with the hose. The biggest challenge for everyone was not to knock into and dump the buckets of soapy water while trying to rinse the vehicles. Other than that, the operation went smoothly.

Many of the employees of the store had their cars washed. People from Sacred Heart Parish, also drove up and donated to the cause. In addition, the public would stop by and park their cars for a wash while they went inside to shop. The free will offerings were very generous.

The Youth Group would like to thank all those who generously supported their efforts to raise money to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference, this November. Thank you to the dad’s of Sacred Heart Youth for timely advice on car washing, and especially to HyVee and Kristi Schultz for helping to make it happen.
