Corpus Christi 2010
compiled by Danielle Hoch
Down in adoration falling, Lo! Sacred Host we hail! The words of Tantum Ergo, an ancient Catholic hymn, could be heard whispering through the trees of Chariton on July 27th. The second annual Corpus Christi procession had begun.
Starting in Sacred Heart, Our Eucharistic Lord made His way on to Main Street. The crucifix, carried by seminarian, James Chester, lead the way while the bagpipes cried out to the Heavens. The censer kept time and the altar servers, baring candles surrounded a small canopy which housed the Eucharist enthroned in a beautiful monstrance. The monstrance was carried by various priests that had come to do homage to the King of kings. Monsignor Frank Chiodo, Fr. Ray Higgins, Fr. Chris Reising, Fr. Glenn Wilwerding and Fr. Christopher Pisut held the monstrance high for all of Chariton to see.
In Our Lord’s journey through the streets of Chariton, He made a few stops. At the houses of John Murphy, Jason and Heather Swarthout, Dennis and Delores Milnes, Mike and Kris Bengtson, and Roger and Kathy Bingham altar had been built. Upon arrival at each of these destinations, the monstrance was placed upon the altar. Then the faithful worshiped with songs, a reading from the Gospel, Divine Praises, and Benediction.
The procession continued down Main Street and up Illion. It took a turn onto Grand many people joining along the way. The last turn on Auburn took the Bread of Life and His followers back to Sacred Heart Church. Each step of the way had made a public profession of the participant's faith in and love of the Eucharist.
The second annual Corpus Christi procession ended much as it had begun. Bagpipes, incense, candles, Knight of Columbus in full attire. Every sense was called upon; all pointing to the Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist. Faith will tell us Christ is present where the feeble sense fail!
